A Vision Trip to Mozambique Island

On the Island we found this sign in front of some of the ruins that says, "Luxurious apartments--Future Installations." Someone can see more than the ruins!

"Vision of great potential"--That is how we felt as we walked the island.

Ilha de Mozambique (Mozambique Island) is on the northern coast of Mozambique. It is 1000 miles north of Maputo. It was the first capital of Mozambique.

As we walked the island we saw the influence of the Portuguese, Arabs, Indians, Dutch and the Jesuits.

Most of the people of the island are of the Macua tribe.

The poverty and its results hit us in the face as we saw the beaches littered with garbage, smelled the open sewage and had people asking us for our water bottle or any thing else we were carrying.

We were impressed with the history of the place and the potential of what it could be. The day we were there it celebrated 190 years as a city.

Meeting these two with their catch for the day impressed Ken, the fisherman. These beautiful fish are called parrot fish--beautiful as well as very delicious.

God gave us some great encounters with a Portuguese inn keeper, a Muslim cleric, the administrator of the island and one of the few known Christians. We left knowing that we will remember and pray for these people and this place. This was a trip of a life time.
