Flurry 2 X Brazilian Bureaucracy 0

In Brazil the debate on the street is which South American soccer teams will make it to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. But the victory for the Flurrys was Ken's attempts to renew our CPF(social security number). After a number of returned visits to official entities, finally, Ken scored the victory point that counted. As of yesterday, we both have our CPF. Now we work on opening a bank account and buying a car. Flurrys 2 X Brazilian Bureaucracy 0.
While Ken was visiting various government agencies, I was getting my own crash course in reentry to Brazilian culture and language. I was translating for a filming crew from ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International), Colorado Springs. They were filming promotional videos and taking photos for future textbooks and calendars. We visited PACA (Pan American Christian Academy) and a number of Christian Brazilian schools associated with ACSI Brazil. As I listened to the various directors' stories, it gave me a glimpse of some Christian schools here in Sao Paulo and the joys, needs, and challenges they face.

When not translating, I enjoyed talking with the students. Most of the time they wanted to practice their English. We also heard stories that tugged our hearts. At a school that works in a slum, we heard this life changing story. Not long after "Maria", a little five year old girl came to the Christian preschool, she asked Jesus in her heart and asked if she could pray for her family. Maria's dad was a notorious thief. He terrorized many of the local businesses. One of the businesses he took special delight in terrorizing was one that provided food for the children of the school. As Maria's parents began to see a change in her life, her dad came to the school to get answers. As Maria's teacher and the director began to explain the reasons for her changes, the father became convicted about his life choices and wanted forgiveness. They showed him how to become a Christ follower. When he heard that the very man he terrorized and robbed was the same man who had been feeding his little girl, he broke down and cried. Then Maria's dad walked to that business and asked the owner for forgiveness. The whole family has sinced been transformed because of a little girl's prayers.

One of the pleasures of being here is enjoying our two grandchildren, Samuel (7) and Ysabel (4 months). Kevin and Vanessa are delighted to have Mom and Dad nearby. We are also delighted to be near them.

Reporting from Brazil,
